Fraud and Ethics

GEPF Ethics Manual

The GEPF Ethics Manual, includes disclosure of financial and other private interests, gift acceptance disclosure, as well as business interests or employment outside of the GEPF. The manual is meant to assist employees with understanding the Code of Ethics, how to disclose in terms of gifts received, and the disclosure of private business interests.

Conflict of Interest

In line with the requirements of the Conflict of Interest Policy and King IV Code on Corporate Governance, Trustees are required to provide a declaration of interests at least annually in a manner that is acceptable to the Fund and complies with the Policy. The trustees are required to provide the Company Secretary with any changes to the declaration as soon as they occur. Furthermore, all employees are also required to disclose their financial interests on an annual basis. Financial interests may take the form of shares, directorships, or property, which have the potential to conflict with GEPF official duties.

Gift Acceptance Disclosure

The exchange of gifts and entertainment is a normal part of doing business and can
legitimately build goodwill in business relationships. However, inappropriate or excessive
gifts and entertainment offered to and received from third parties, including service providers and public officials, can be used to exert improper influence and amount to or create an impression of bribery. The GEPF does not offer, accept, or solicit gifts or entertainment inappropriately as an incentive or means of influencing actions or decisions. The GEPF Trustees and Employees are required to observe the requirements of the policy in this regard.

Business interests or employment outside of the GEPF

Employees must ensure the Fund’s time is utilised to conduct the GEPF’s business
activities. They must not perform remunerative work outside their employment without
permission from the Principal Executive Officer. The Code of Conduct also stipulates that an employee cannot, without approval, undertake remunerative work outside her/his official duties or use office equipment for such work.

Whistleblowing Policy

The GEPF has an approved Whistleblowing Policy that makes provision for raising concerns where there are reasonable grounds for acts of fraud, corruption, crime, or impropriety within the GEPF. All stakeholders are expected to act in good faith by only reporting information that they reasonably believe is true. The GEPF has various platforms to report fraud and unethical behaviour.
